A 5-minute routine for FRIDAY tonight
You do not need a worksheet or a full study session. This is the whole thing:
- Minute 1 — clap the sounds. Say FRIDAY and clap once per sound. Then look at the written word and count the vowels. The mismatch is the point: more letters than sounds is precisely why this word gets shortened.
- Minute 2 — ask it back. Go through the prompts: "What is ready to help you remember FRIDAY?" Let your child answer from memory. If they stall, give the picture, not the letter.
- Minute 3 — write it. Have them write FRIDAY once, saying each character as they go. Once, not five times. Writing it repeatedly stops being retrieval after the first go and becomes copying.
- Minute 4 — break it on purpose. Write it wrong yourself and ask them to catch you. Spotting the error is harder than producing it, and children love being the one who is right.
- Minute 5 — leave it. Stop while it is still fun. Come back tomorrow for 60 seconds and again in three days. Spacing is what moves it into long-term memory; more minutes tonight will not.
If it goes wrong: when your child gets FRIDAY wrong on the third or fourth go, the answer is almost never more repetitions. Change the character instead. If Fish is not landing, let them pick their own thing beginning with F — their own choice always sticks better than ours, and it hands them control of a task that usually happens to them.
